The project started as a redesign of the Wassily chair, on the occasion of the Bauhaus 100th anniversary in 2019. It resulted in a new armchair, with strips of canvas fabric stretched across two steel hoops, which “extends” up from ground level and “outline” the front and the back of the chair. The visual themes are dominant seating surfaces, easy-to-read construction, and a low but airy sitting position.
From here, the tension between the steel frame and the stretched fabric emerged as an interesting visual theme, which became clearer in a foldable chair. The chair opens and closes like a pair of scissors, the user feels the tensile forces in the construction when unfolding and sitting in the chair. A foldable chair, practical for outdoor use, suits the light and hard aesthetic of the design.
The yellow fabric clarifies the tension and lightness of the seat, the black steel suits the industrial frame. Together, the colours reinforce the contrast between the materials.
